The key to a fast border crossing is preparation. We ensure all shipment control numbers (SCNs) are generated and submitted to customs brokers well before the truck arrives at the border.
Northbound (USA ➔ Canada)
PARS
Pre-Arrival Review System. We coordinate with your Canadian broker to ensure the PARS sticker is scanned and cleared while the driver is in transit.
Southbound (Canada ➔ USA)
PAPS
Pre-Arrival Processing System. Our carriers submit e-Manifests to U.S. Customs (CBP) ensuring fast clearance into the States.

Canada Freight FAQ
Common questions about shipping to and from Canada.
Documentation & Compliance
The essentials are the Bill of Lading (BOL), Commercial Invoice (with value, description, and country of origin), and the Canada Customs Invoice (CCI) for goods valued over $2,500 CAD. For duty-free status, a USMCA/CUSMA Certification of Origin is required.
PARS (Pre-Arrival Review System) is for goods entering Canada; the carrier submits data to the CBSA using a barcoded label. PAPS (Pre-Arrival Processing System) is for goods entering the U.S. We coordinate both to ensure the shipment is cleared while the truck is in motion.
ACI (Advance Commercial Information) is a mandatory CBSA program. Carriers must electronically submit cargo data to Canada Customs at least one hour before arriving at the border. Failure to do so results in refusal of entry and fines.
The USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) allows for duty-free entry of qualifying goods. To benefit, you must provide a valid Certification of Origin proving the goods originated in North America.
Logistics & Operations
Canada allows higher gross vehicle weights than the U.S. (often up to 87,000+ lbs depending on axle configuration and province). However, U.S. Interstate limits (80,000 lbs) usually dictate the max weight for cross-border moves unless specialized permits are obtained.
Transit times are comparable to domestic U.S. shipping, plus 1-2 hours for border clearance if paperwork is in order. A typical run from Chicago to Toronto is next-day service.
Yes. If goods cannot be cleared at the border, we can move them 'In Bond' to an inland sufferance warehouse where they can be cleared by customs later, or to move goods through Canada to another country.
The NRI program allows U.S. companies to act as the 'importer of record' in Canada. This lets you sell to Canadian customers on a landed cost basis (delivery duty paid), making the transaction seamless for the buyer.
Specialized Freight & Delays
Yes, but compliance is strict. Shipments must meet Transport Canada's TDG regulations as well as U.S. DOT rules. Our carriers are Hazmat certified and experienced in cross-border dangerous goods.
The most common causes are missing documents (commercial invoice), incorrect data on the ACI eManifest, or random CFIA (food inspection) or CBSA exams. We mitigate this by pre-validating all docs before pickup.
